Fun Dives

Koh Tao is renowned as a perfect place for scuba dive training. Furthermore, it offers a wonderful variety of dive sites for the certified scuba diver regardless of their experience. Spectacular submerged pinnacles poke like mountain tops from the sea floor, colourful coral gardens and large boulder formations teeming with tropical reef fish await you on your fun dives.  Rocky substrate and flat sandy bottoms conceal many strange oddities such as pipefish, various sea slugs and the occasional sea horse for the sharp eyed scuba diver to find. The abundance of marine life from large pelagic ocean wanderers to minute crustaceans caters for all divers needs. 

Scuba dive trips typically run twice a day. Morning and afternoon with each trip consisting of two fun dives with a surface interval on the boat in-between, to give you time to “off-gas”, fill in log books or just kick back and lap up the sun.  Night dive trips run every other night and consist of one dive. Frequently the first dive on the morning trip goes to one of the deeper dive sites a little further away from the island; this increases the possibility of seeing larger ocean dwellers. The afternoon dives are generally shallower and closer to land.  

Each trip consists of two dives. Prices are calculated using a sliding scale system with fixed prices for special trips and night dives.  Fun dives start at 1000 baht per dive and go down to 700 baht per dive depending on how many you do.  All scuba dive centres cater for certified divers however do bear in mind that there are often courses being conducted on the same boat and course standards sometimes dictate where the dives must take place. 

All dive centres announce the day before what dive sites they intend to visit the following day. Due to factors such as the weather this can change at short notice.  At the end of the day the captain of the boat has the last say with safety of the divers being the highest priority.

Most diving on Koh Tao is done from boats (if you suffer from sea sickness be sure to mention it to the dive professional and they will advise you) for sites within close proximity long-tail boats are occasionally used. Usually however, specifically converted traditional Thai fishing boats are used, all of which are facilitated with, dry storage area, toilets, first aid equipment, emergency oxygen and sun deck in addition to light refreshments such as water, tea, coffee and fruit.

It is also possible to charter your own boat or get a private guide for you or your group. Though it does cost more it allows you to choose where you dive and who you dive with.
