Koh Tao Diving - If there is only one activity you do on your travels make sure it is scuba diving, it truly can be a life changing experience, just ask some of the local dive professionals about diving and you will see that many of the “long termers” only planned to stay a short while before they got bitten by the underwater bug.
What is scuba diving? SCUBA is an acronym for Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus and was designed and first used by Emile Gagnan and Jacques-Yves Cousteau, back in the 60’s. The equipment has come a long way since then however, it uses the same basic principle.
You breathe compressed air from a cylinder mounted on a buoyancy control device (usually worn
like a jacket). Controlling your buoyancy using the device and the air in your lungs is something you learn on the course and once mastered allows you to experience the wonderful feeling of weightlessness. People describe scuba diving as like visiting outer space, it is true that the underwater world is alien to most non divers and the strange equipment and zero gravity feeling adds to the otherworldly feeling.

PADI - Professional Association of Diving Instructors
PADI or the Professional Association of Dive Instructor is the most well-known scuba diving training agency on the planet, to such an extent that people often ask to do the “PADI” course when referring to any scuba diving course. Founded in 1966 they have more than forty years’ experience serving scuba divers and have over six thousand dive shops locate around the globe.
SSI - Scuba Schools International
SSI - Scuba Schools International holds the title for the fastest growing scuba diving training agency in the world. They have gone from strength to strength on Koh Tao over the past few years with a majority of shops now running SSI courses alongside PADI courses from beginner right through to instructor level and beyond. Furthermore many well respected dive shops on Koh Tao now offer only SSI courses.

Here you will find out all you need to know about what is required from you as a certified diver who would like to fun dive on Koh Tao.
Koh Tao is known for its high standards when it comes to safety consequently before being allowed to dive you will be asked for your certification card and log book. If you do not have them do not worry! Each dive centre can look you up online using your name and date of birth.
Although the different certifying agencies (PADI, SSI, BSAC, etc.,) recognise each other’s certification, if an individual dive centre does not represent the certifying agency they may not be willing or able to look you up. There are plenty of dive centre on Koh Tao many of which represent all agencies so as long as you have been certified it is not a big problem to track you down however having your card and logbook prevents any of this unnecessary hassle.
