There are more than 40 dive shops spread throughout the island, and all of them start beginner courses on a daily basis. Before you ever go in the water you will need to make sure you are in good medical condition and if you have any doubts, there are medics who can do a check-up. Many new divers fear the unknown of the underwater world, but very quickly realize that in the capable hands of instructors and knowledge of the equipment, scuba diving becomes a safe, magical, and unforgettable experience. If you don't want to commit to a 3-4 day course for certification, then a "Try Dive" with an istructor for an afternoon may be your answer.
Scuba diving is a social and peaceful activity filled with excitement and wonder. So many first-timers have gone from zero to hero starting off as beginners and now living on Koh Tao as working instructors. Ask your scuba diving instructor about thier story and you will surly see yourself there too, a holiday must.
Languages – Beginner courses can be taught in a variety of languages, if the dive centre does not list the language you need they may employ a free- lance instructor to teach the course in the required language. Beginner Courses include all the basic equipment and academic materials needed to complete the course.
Course group size - varies from dive centre to dive centre, the certifying agencies (PADI/SSI etc) set a maximum group size per instructor for each course, within these ratios dive centres will set group sizes depending on how busy they are. Try dives have a maximum of 4 people whereas for the open water 4 – 8 is the norm when it is busy.

Diving conditions in Koh Tao are perfect for beginners. Strong currents are rare, the water is warm all year round and there are plenty of shallow dive sites. Marine life is abundant and the visibility is good most of the time.
Optional extras include a professional videographer making a short movie of your dives (they often join the group on the last day of the open water course, buying the DVD is optional) or a professional photographer. Wrist mounted dive computers and underwater cameras and torches can also be rented in most dive centres.
